In a sweet triumph of songs that have nothing to do with racially charged violence or drunken controversies, BTS’s Jung Kook earned his first number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Seven,” featuring rapper Lato, officially debuted at the top spot on Monday, July 24, holding off recent performances from Jason Aldean and Morgan Wallen.
With this latest award, Jung Kook joins fellow bandmate Jimin as a BTS member with chart-topping solo success. Together BTS had previous #1 hits with “Dynamite”, “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)”, “Life Goes On”, “Butter”, “Permission To Dance” and “My Universe”.
Seven, our song of the week co-produced and co-written by Andrew Watt, officially kicked off Jung Kook’s solo era — but there’s no word yet on when ARMY can expect a full album from the singer, dancer, and youngest member of BTS. according to paintingOnly eight other bands in history have seen multiple members achieve a #1 single on the chart, including The Beatles and Destiny’s Child.

Were it not for Jung Kook and Latto, Aldean’s latest single, “Try That In a Small Town” could have hit No. 1. Despite (or because of) the racist undertones and connections to an attack on an anti-segregation reporter in small-town Jim Crow-era Mississippi, the track jumped to No. 2 this week. Meanwhile, Wallen’s “Last Night” was denied the chance to break the record for most weeks at number one.
In a happier corner of the internet, Jung Kook’s pals have also been busy — Jimin received a shout-out (and guitar!) from Ryan Gosling, Ken himself, after Gosling was confirmed to be wearing Jimin’s “permission to dance” suit in the new Barbie film.
