David Letterman surprises shoppers by getting groceries at an Iowa supermarket

David Letterman had some fun messing with employees and customers while stocking and packing groceries at Hy-Vee Supermarket in Grimes, Iowa this past weekend. According to the Des Moines Registerthe retired late-night host spent an hour at the shop Friday after flying in a Hy-Vee Indycar race.

In a video shared Sunday, Letterman walks through a few plays with a pair of staffers named Caden Grimes and Elyse McIlhon as they organize soup cans, loiter near a giant Gumball machine, and brush off a small mess on the floor. At one point, Letterman re-caps a can of Ministone Soup and drinks it right before getting on the megaphone and announcing to customers that celery was free “today and only today.”

“I’ve spent a good deal of my life in a grocery store in Indianapolis, and it was the last of the single, proprietary grocery stores and I loved it,” Letterman says in the video. “And if I could give something back to the marketing community, I would love to — but I don’t have it every day, of course.”

Letterman co-owned the No. 45 race car driven by Christian Lundgaard through Rahal Letterman’s Lanegan Racing Team. Although Lundgaard was taking his first IndyCar win at the Honda Indy Toronto earlier this month, he finished 20th at the Hy-Vee Indycar weekend.

Meanwhile, Lana Del Rey was spotted working out at a waffle house in Alabama last week. No word on Letterman’s next gig from Illumination, but the fourth season of his Netflix talk show My next guest needs no introduction Available now.
