Mike Skinner is back with The darker the shadow, the brighter the light, His new album, The Streets. The project, his first full-length album as The Streets in 12 years, arrives in its entirety October 20 via 679 Recordings/Warner Music UK Ltd. In anticipation, the lead single “Troubled Waters” is now out.
Skinner made The darker the shadow, the brighter the light Along with a self-made movie of the same name in every sense of the word; Described by the artist as a “noir murder mystery set in London club territory,” the artist also wrote, directed, starred in, edited, financed and produced himself.
“It has been seven long years working on this film and album,” Skinner said in a statement. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and after dipping my toe into some short films and music videos, I felt ready. I tried to go down the traditional route a little bit, but it’s always better to follow my instincts and get at it myself, so I directed it, acted it out, and edited it.” It’s all the fruits of a decade on the DJ circuit, people-watching in clubs and backrooms, testing beats and basslines to see what connected – and putting it all together in The darker the shade the brighter the light. “
New track “Troubled Waters” has a halting melody that sounds like it should anchor an upbeat pop song, but in its lyrics, Skinner has something more serious in mind. “Is it nature or nurture when you hurt your sons?” Asked. Listen to the single below.
This fall, The Streets will embark on a UK tour. Tickets will be available through Ticketmaster.
In 2020, The Streets released the mixtape None of us get out of this alive. Since then, Skinner has shared the single “Who’s Got The Bag (June 21)” as well as an EP Brexit at Tiffany’s.
