Volkswagen plans to adopt Tesla charging standards amid increased competition for electric cars

by admin

German auto giant Volkswagen is considering partnering with Tesla to give its drivers access to the electric car maker’s network of superchargers, as a growing list of automakers adopt Tesla’s charging standard, in the context of growing competition among electric vehicles.

  • Volkswagen board member Michael Steiner said the automaker would “welcome access to additional charging infrastructure” in North America with charging ports compatible with Tesla chargers. Porsche has not been disclosed.
  • Mercedes-Benz will also allow its drivers to charge their car at more than 12,000 Tesla charging stations in North America using an adapter starting next year, while Mercedes-Benz electric cars manufactured from 2025 will be equipped with a charging port compatible with Tesla stations, the German automaker announced.
  • Swedish automaker Polestar has also agreed to equip its electric cars with charging ports identical to those used in Tesla cars, called the North American Charging Standard (NACS), from 2025, while drivers will be able to access chargers next year with an adapter.
  • Polestar’s announcement gives drivers access to Tesla’s network of Superchargers in the United States and Canada and comes just over a week after Rivian, an electric truck and SUV maker based in Irvine, Calif., reported that drivers will be able to use about 12,000 Tesla stations. Shipping in the US and Canada begins next spring.
  • Volvo, which owns a minority stake in Polestar and has a stated goal of producing an all-electric fleet by 2030, announced a similar deal with Tesla earlier this week, giving XC40 or C40 owners access to Tesla charging stations through the use of a converter from First half of 2024 – Future Volvo owners equipped with a NACS supercharger will still be able to use a standard CCS (Combined Charging System) charging station with adapter.
  • Tesla also opened up its charging network to Ford and General Motors earlier this month, while Toyota last week revealed plans for a new generation of electric vehicles to remain competitive.
  • Polestar stock jumped nearly 4% Thursday to 70 cents (64 cents), after hitting a seven-month low earlier this month.

Under the agreement between Rivian and Tesla, Rivian R1T and R1S owners will be able to use an adapter for Tesla charging stations, while Rivian’s charging ports on its future R1 and R2 cars will be compatible with the chargers. to significantly expand Rivian’s charging network, which is a limiting factor for EV owners who travel long distances.

A large number

3,500. That’s the number of fast chargers that Rivian is striving to install at its 600 locations in North America as part of its “Rivian Adventure Network,” in order to guarantee drivers a 225-kilometer range in just 20 minutes of charging. Rivian also plans to install more than 10,000 high-power Level 2 chargers in the United States and Canada.
