Ken has spoken. Finally, an exclusive new preview of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie The movie spotlights our leading man – played, of course, by Ryan Gosling – to deliver a dramatic musical number about how hard it is to be No. 2. On the guitar.
“I just don’t know who I am without you,” Ken tearfully tells his love (Margot Robbie) as she prepares to leave Barbieland. “It’s Barbie” and Ken. There is no “just Ken”.
That all changes when a ballad piano note kicks in and Gosling’s – er-keen – flaunts a singing voice. The melodramatic pore over the hardships he endured throughout his manufactured plastic life, wondering if he was destined for the average bleached-blonde legacy.

And we feel the man. It’s hard to distinguish yourself in a world where every man is also a part-time astronaut with six pack abs? It all boils down to one line: “I’m just Ken / Anywhere else I’d be 10.”
And to top it all off, Slash’s guitar flourishes add a welcome dose of cheeky machismo. Watch Gosling sing a bit of “I’m Just Ken” below, before Barbie Premieres Friday, July 21st.
