The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Saturday opposed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), alleging that it would harm the distinct identity of minority communities in the country.
During the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Gurdwara Summit Committee chaired by the SGPC President, Harjinder Singh Dami, the members affirmed that there is no need for uniform core obligations in the country as the constitution recognizes the ‘principle of unity in diversity’.
Dami told reporters after the meeting that minorities in the country fear that the Unified Civil Code will harm their unique identity and religious beliefs.
The SGPC formed a sub-committee of Sikh intellectuals, historians, scholars and lawyers of the UCC and after an initial review rejected the Uniform Code.
This sub-committee includes SGPC General Secretary Gurcharan Singh Grewal, Principal Advisor Puran Singh Hundal, SGPC members Bhagwant Singh Sialka, Paramjit Kaur Landran, Kirangut Kaur, Professor Kashmir Singh, Dr Inderjit Singh Gogwani, Dr Paramveer Singh and Dr Shamkaur. Singh.
Al-Dami said that the executive meeting of the coordinating council of the agreement expressed its opposition to the Council of the Federation of Contractors.
“Any challenge to Pani Bana (traditional dress of Gurbanis and Sikhs), Pul Bal (sublime or sublime words or thoughts as well as sublime and sincere words or thoughts), principles, traditions, values, way of life, culture, independent existence and separation can never be accepted as an entity of Sikhs and Sikhs cannot be tested (Code of Conduct) by Myriad under the Land Law.
Therefore, the Sikh community is against WUC, he said.
The 21st Legal Commission also rejected the Common Law Commission as undesirable and unnecessary, said Dami.
On other decisions taken in Saturday’s meeting, the SGPC chairman said the SGPC will pursue the Paul Bangash case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler.
He said the CBI had filed an indictment in court against Tytler and that the fees for lawyers defending the case would be paid by SGPC.
He claimed that after the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) backed down.
Now, he said, the SGPC has decided to pursue the case.
