Fiona Apple made her music production debut in 2023 with a cover of the official Idaho state song “Here We Have Idaho” for NPR’s This American Life.
In the May 26 episode titled “Jane Doe,” Apple’s cutthroat rendition follows a story about a 19-year-old intern for the Idaho State Legislature who reported being raped by state representative Aaron von Ellinger in 2021, and the aftermath she suffered after his audience. Hear morals and subsequent resignation. The cover has not yet been widely released, but it can be heard at the end of Act Two (starting at the 1:00:52 mark of the online broadcast).
The Idaho ballad makes an unexpected choice by the New York native, but it also feels familiar sonically with a backing from Fiona Apple. Bring bolt cutters Collaborators include drummer Amy Wood, guitarist David Garza, guitarist Sebastian Steinberg, and bassist John Wood. However, her inclusion in the episode feels unmistakably personal as a fellow sexual assault survivor, an experience she has addressed in her music since her 1996 debut album, Tides.
