Romy is officially branching out from The xx with mid air, her first ever solo album. The project will arrive on September 8th via Young, while the new single “Loveher” is out now.
Much like xx members single releases, mid air It is a dance album. Romy worked again with producers Fred.. and Stuart Price, as well as Jamie xx, for the project, which a press release described as a “love letter” to gay clubs. However, its 11 songs also deal with heavy themes including grief and identity. According to Romi, the record is filled with “soulful music to dance to”.
mid air It begins with “Loveher”, the album opener and the first song written for the project. The playful love song comes with an equally instructive backstory: After Romi and Farid’s on-again, off-again.. paired up to write songs for other artists, “Farid asked me, Who could this be for?” Male singer. “And I tentatively said… maybe me?” From there, work on the album began in earnest.
