“Summer of Luv” is a corny, psychedelic number, but true to Portugal. Frontman John Baldwin Gurley, it didn’t start out that way. “When we originally sat down to write it,” he said in a statement, “we intended to make this heavy song with a big riff, but the vocals came out cold because I was still recovering from my jaw issues, we realized it sat better in that space. The song was so different than it used to be.” We wanted it.”
Gourley continued, “As we were working on the song, I felt like it needed another sound, Roban from Unknown Mortal Orchestra also lives in Portland and he’s one of our favorite artists, he just fits.”
