Parisian producer Marianne Sloat, who helped bring the work of authors like Lars von Trier, Lucretia Martell and Argentinian Lisandro Alonso to the big screen, has been honored by the Locarno Film Festival.

Slot will receive the Raimondo Rezzonico Award from the Swiss Festival for a product that embodies the independent spirit. She will receive the award on Aug. 5 with honors including a performance of Icelandic director Benedict Erlingsson’s black comedy Woman at War, followed by an onstage conversation on Aug. 6.

More variety

Born in Denmark, Slot founded the Paris-based Slot Company in 1993. She has been the French producer for Von Trier since 1995, starting with Breaking the Waves. Over the years, Slot has curated the work of a large number of freelance writers at various points in their careers. Besides Martel and Erlingsson, these include Bent Hamer, Małgorzata Szumowska, Paz Encina, Emma Dante, Marian Crişan, Juliette Garcia, Yeşim Ustaoğlu, Sergei Loznitsa and Naomi Kawase.

“Marian Slott’s approach to film production has left a deep and lasting mark on contemporary cinema, rewriting the rules of the game for collaboration and reflection between filmmakers and producers,” said Locarno Artistic Director Giona Nazzaro in a press release. He added, “At a time when cinema risks becoming an infinite iteration of existing paradigms, Marianne Sloat leads by example, demonstrating the beauty of freedom and risk.

Slot will soon be presented in Cannes with “Eureka” star Alonso Viggo Mortensen, which will have its world premiere in the premiere section in Cannes.

Previous Rezzonico Award winners have included David Linde, Jeremy Thomas, Christine Vachon, Paolo Branco, Menachem Golan, Ted Hope, and Jason Blum.

The 76th edition will take place in Locarno from August 2 to 12.
