Julie Byrne is preparing to share her first album in six years, Grand wings. To celebrate the announcement, the singer-songwriter shared the lead single “Summer Glass” as well as a tour in 2023.
Byrne ft Grater Wings With a small crew of close collaborators across Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. On the record, her fingerpicked guitar is augmented by synthesizers, ukulele, strings, and Byrne’s newest instrument, piano. Thematically, the album muses on the stages of grief, but it’s underscored bittersweet by the power of steadfastness in its wake.
“My hope Grand wings It is that she lives on as a love letter to my chosen family and as an expression of the depth of my commitment to our shared future,” Byrne said in a press release. “Reshaping grief makes me more aware of what death does not hide from me. I commit to it in heart, words and voice. Music isn’t bound to any kind of linear time, so it’s able to record and speak to the future: that’s what it felt like, when we were synchronized, alive, all happening at once. What I felt was rising against my own intensity and pushing back, the love that made it all worth the fight. These memories are my values, they belong to me.”

“Summer Glass” is an enchanting ballad that seems to be a meditation on the circle of life: “One day, the skin that holds me will be dust / And I’ll be ready to travel again,” Byrne sings. Instead of any drumming, the track is laced with a shimmering synthesizer ostinato that invites the humility and curiosity of stargazing on a clear night.
Byrne’s tour will take her across the UK, Europe and the US, including a show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City.
