Some flights from northwest British Columbia have been canceled due to ash from an erupting Russian volcano thousands of miles away.
Air Canada said it is monitoring the Scheflöch volcanic ash cloud, which caused the cancellation of some of its regional flights to and from Prince Rupert and Terrace on Thursday.
An email said further adjustments to the schedule could occur depending on the direction of the ash cloud.
The volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, about 4,300 km west of Tiras, erupted on Tuesday and sent a cloud of ash up to 10 km.
A volcano erupted on the Kamchatka Peninsula early Tuesday morning, sending dust into the sky and through communities in eastern Russia.
Alaska Airlines has also canceled more than two dozen flights in the state, citing safety concerns because volcanic ash can cause a jet engine to shut down.
WestJet has also canceled flights to the airport because planes will have to fly through the ash, said Karman Hendry, director of Northwest Regional Airport in Terrace Kitimat.
“I’d rather be there than wish they were here,” he said in an interview Thursday.
Hendry said he doesn’t know how many flights will be affected, but the airport isn’t expecting any more flights to arrive for the rest of the day.
