Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning Viet Thanh Nguyen novel of the same name, the show was described in the official log as “a cross-cultural satire espionage thriller about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his exile to the United States.”
In the trailer, Hoa Xuande is so vaguely vague as the titular spy (“I can be a Viet Cong for all you know,” he says, before chuckled, “I love America!”) that everyone he interacts with ends up being Confused. his loyalties. At one point, when one of Downey Jr.’s many personalities tries to enlist the services of Xuande, he puts up a deranged front that throws Downey Jr. off his tracks completely. “Look at you all seriously!” he laughs. “Man, you would be a terrible spy.”
