A jury has ruled that Gwyneth Paltrow is not at fault in a 2016 skiing accident that allegedly left the 76-year-old complainant with broken ribs and a concussion.
A jury on Thursday dismissed Paltrow, a civil suit filed by retired ophthalmologist Terry Sanderson, who alleged that the Oscar-winning actress was responsible for a collision between the two while skiing at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah. Sanderson originally sued Paltrow for $3.1 million, claiming the accident resulted in a concussion, four broken ribs and long-term brain damage, but re-sued for just over $300,000 after a judge dismissed his initial lawsuit. Paltrow disputed the $1 and attorneys’ fees, claiming that the plaintiff confronted her from behind.
The trial, which began March 21 and was broadcast live in its entirety, resulted in several bizarre moments, including virtual and live recreations of the incident, Sanderson comparing Paltrow to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and an exchange of opinions between the actress and Sanderson. Lawyers examined the status of her friendship with Taylor Swift, who also filed a token $1 lawsuit in 2017. On the platform, Paltrow experienced how Sanderson felt “violated” at first while she was “trying to make sense of what was going on.”

The proceedings also produced depositions from Paltrow’s children and ski instructors, who corroborated Paltrow’s account of the day and its immediate aftermath. Meanwhile, Sanderson’s case concerned an elderly man with “no joy left in his life” after the accident rendered him unable to maintain personal relationships or enjoy his usual pleasures such as wine tasting, supported under oath by his ex-girlfriend and neuroradiologist. , respectively.
Sanderson made a statement at a news conference after the decision was announced Thursday. Standing next to a member of his legal team, he called his characterization during the trial a “disappointment” and revealed that Paltrow wished him well before walking out of the courtroom.
Paltrow’s attorney, Stephen W. Owens, had no immediate comment on behalf of the actress.
