Tyler, the Creator confronts his past on new single “SORRY NOT SORRY”: broadcast

Tyler, the Creator is never one to ask for forgiveness, but he makes up for all the apologies he missed on new single “SORRY NOT SORRY.” Now with a self-directed accompanying music video, it’s another cut from the upcoming deluxe edition of Tyler’s 2021 album Contact me if you are lost.

The video for “SORRY NOT SORRY” begins with red velvet curtains opening onto a stage production starring an entire army of Tylers from ages past: In the first stage, we notice references to the covers. flower boy cherry bomb, Igor wolf, And of course, Contact me if you are lost. On an elegant instrumental, Tyler shouts out some long overdue apologies in what appears to be chronological order. He begins by lamenting how he treated his family and old friends: “I’m sorry the four minutes you see your son can feel like a chore,” he says.

As the track progressed, he began unpacking the criticisms he’s faced since coming into the public eye, such as his coming into his sexuality and whether or not he had “real struggles” growing up: “Sorry for the guys I had to hide/Sorry for the guys I had to lie to” , he sings. “Sorry if you want to look up information I don’t want to give/So you haunt, make up lies, just to talk about my private life ’cause you’re a freak.”

But one thing Tyler Will not Apologies for “SORRY NOT SORRY” is the success he’s built for himself: “N**** claims you’re arrogant when they can’t handle your feel-good moments,” he spits. “I have two words: FUCK THEM.” As both of the other people start the stage throughout the video, the final seconds find him in a final fistfight with Tyler, seemingly putting those earlier issues to rest.
