Comedy entrepreneurs and comedy fans everywhere have reason to rejoice: a Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong biography is on the way.
Written by Dania Jimenez and Hannah McMechan (both of whom wrote on Comedy Central’s 2020 reboot) The Ren & Stimpy Show) and directed by Cristian Mercado, the film will follow the comedy duo’s origins through a “before-seen” lens, showing their rise from obscurity to stardom. The movie’s release date is still unknown, but many feel it’s time for the duo to get recognition on the big screen.
“We’re excited to show the world how two men from very different backgrounds came together, changed comedy, and made cannabis mainstream!” (pun intended), Cech and Chung said in a joint statement.
Marin and Chong will receive executive producer credits on the project. The beloved cult icons have partnered with Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures after the production company acquired the rights to the as-yet-untitled film. Underground and Five All in the Fifth Entertainment were brought on to the project to produce as well.
Since their classic movie, up in the smoke, which debuted in 1978, Cheech and Chong have been a mainstay of the American cultural scene. As Underground’s Trevor Engelson points out, this new movie will give younger generations a chance to get fresh context on cult favorites.
“Working with Cheech and Chong is a childhood dream of mine,” Engelson said in a statement. “I used to listen to my dad’s version of their albums growing up, so to help bring their amazing true story to a new generation of fans is a real honor.”
Cheech and Chong’s last feature film was in 2013 Cheech & Chong!.
