Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello is the latest rock star to come to Meg White’s defense after music journalist Lachlan Markay called her “awful.”
Markai’s commentary faced an intense chorus of backlash led by Jack White, Questlove, Nandy Bushell, and many more. It all started when Markai responded to a tweet about the 20th anniversary of The White Stripes’ hit song “Seven Nation Army.” In response, Markay unapologetically pulls off Meg’s drumming ability while adding that “there’s no better band for freakin’ drumming.”
Now, Morello has raised her opinion with passionate pro-Meg on Instagram: “I heard there’s been some controversy about this recently, so let me set the idiots straight: #MegWhite is one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock and roll.”

He continued, “There are a slew of instantly recognizable drummers rocking their many songs with flavour, fire and flair. She’s on that list, bro. Does she do a lot of intricate tom-tom work? No, thank goodness. She’s got style, swag, personality and charisma.” A flair and awesomeness that’s off the charts and an untouchable atmosphere for all those bore skinned hitters who think we care about your ‘tight’ synth stuff. It’s a powerhouse and its records are forever a step up in how to do it your own way while rocking the goddamn planet.”
Meg White’s minimalist drumming has been a tired and useless source of discussion since The White Stripes emerged in the late 1990s and throughout the early 1990s. While some, like Markay, criticized its simplistic bash-it-out style, many others praised the metronome-like subtlety and uncluttered percussion, a key component of The White Stripes’ recognizable sound.
