Origins is a recurring series that gives artists space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, BTS’s Jimin delves into his new song “Set Me Free Pt.2”, ahead of his first solo album, Face.
When asked about the music video for “Set Me Free Pt. 2,” Jimin smiled in a way that could only be described as mischievous. The dancer, the singer, and the BTS member are talking to them a result Zoom in/out a tailored conversation about the dynamic solo demo for his upcoming solo project, Faceis set to be released on March 24.
Wearing an oversized bomber jacket and trusty bucket hat at HYBE’s Seoul office, Jimin displays the kind of conversational range many think of when they watch him perform on stage — he’s cheerful, cheerful, and talkative; He is also equally thoughtful and serious in his reflections on his work. “When this song was made, I really felt attached to it,” he recalled. “I went to the States myself to record the choir, and it was really nice listening to them next to them. I remember it as a really good memory.”

This album marks Jimin’s first solo project — like his fellow BTS members, he has plenty of hit singles within the band’s sprawling discography, but only one single has been released. Face He’ll see Jimin take center stage in a different way. He describes it as a “new starting point”.
When the track listing for the album was revealed, many noticed that this pre-release song was labeled “Pt.2” despite the fact that Jimin doesn’t have any existing songs to his name titled “Set Me Free”. He confirms it’s a reference to a track on fellow SUGA band Agust D’s second mixtape, D-2. “There’s no connection, and we didn’t try to split Part One or Part Two,” he explains. “But since it turns out that my song is about freedom and moving forward, and SUGA’s song is about some of the stories that came before, I thought it would be nice to come after.”
Dedicated fans – and anyone who’s been lucky enough to see BTS live – recognize Jimin as a one-of-a-kind talent. His background in contemporary dance and ballet has made him a hypnotic stage presence. His unique vocals stop people in their tracks. He is the next member of the band to release solo material, an act he never takes seriously. “You know, the members felt very nervous before releasing their solo albums, but compared to those feelings, their results have been very impressive,” he said. “I don’t want to be an embarrassment to my members. I want to be a proud member of BTS.”

“Set Me Free Pt. 2” is a song that announces Jimin’s solo arrival in a major way — big horns, an aforementioned chorus, assertive lyrics, and a serious beat. As with every other decision about a record, the choice to drive with this song (the album’s closer) was intentional. “This album is about how I look back and how I’ve overcome myself… If people understood the feelings I’m trying to express, I would consider the album a success,” he says.
