Truth and Justice is – hopefully – the best of DC Studios. James Gunn will officially direct Superman: Legacy From a text he himself writes.
The director was hired to write the script before being named co-president of DC Studios alongside producer/talent manager Peter Safran. Tasked with fixing the faltering DC Extended Universe, the duo announced their plans for a new series of interconnected stories at the end of January. Superman: Legacy It was tapped to start what it calls “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters” with a target release of July 11, 2025.
Gunn has long been expected to lead the project, but he was only confirmed in the role today (via Hollywood Postpone). He confirmed the news on Twitter, revealing that he did not realize that the planned release date was his late father’s birthday. “I lost my dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend,” Gun tweeted. “He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film, and I wouldn’t make this movie now without him.”

He added that he was offered a Superman movie “years ago”, but could not crack a storyline that gave the character “the dignity he deserves”. He finally sees through by focusing on the legacy of the Last Sons of Krypton: “how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents teach who he is and the choices he makes.” See all of Gunn’s tweets below.
With the director’s chair filled, Gunn must now decide who will play the Man of Steel himself, as it was revealed last December that Henry Cavill would never don the mantle again. “Our DCU picks are based on what we think is best for the story and what’s best for DC characters that have been around for nearly 85 years,” Gunn said in a tweet.
